Astronomers reveal first-ever image of a black hole
On the 10th April the BBC reported that Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole located in a distant galaxy. It shows - a "ring of fire" surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole (report here).
The image was the result of a collaboration of scientists working on the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project. This project is global in its nature, both in terms of the research teams involved and the funding provided to complete its work.
This includes the European Research Council funded project BlackHoleCam (Imaging the Event Horizon of Black Holes) whose principal investigators Dr Michael Kramer Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Germany has emphasised the importance of this breakthrough by stating ‘History books will be divided into the time before the image and after the image.
The recent Horizon Magazine article also highlighted the background support which has contributed making the breakthrough gf the Event Horizon Telescope possible. This includes to the RadioNet project whose consortia includes the University of Glasgow. They state that:
‘Behind the mission to capture an image of a black hole is a global network of radio telescopes – state-of-the-art instruments that need to be able to operate at their full capacity. Maintenance and upgrades are done regularly on the two European telescopes – APEX and the IRAM 30-metre array at Pico Veleta – partly supported by the RadioNet project, which also trains networks of radio astronomers in their use.’
